Macau Reports Record-Breaking Increase in Tourist Arrivals in April

2021

Macau has seen a record-breaking increase in tourist arrivals in April 2021, with the number of visitors to the Chinese territory more than doubling compared to the same month last year. The latest figures from the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) show that the number of tourists visiting Macau in April 2021 was 1.9 million, a whopping 109.3% increase from April 2020.

This impressive growth in tourist arrivals is largely attributed to the easing of travel restrictions between Mainland China and Macau. In April 2021, the number of visitors from Mainland China increased by a staggering 115.2% compared to the same month last year. This is due to the fact that the Chinese government has relaxed its travel restrictions, allowing more people to travel between the two regions.

The influx of tourists has had a positive impact on Macau’s economy, with the total spending by visitors reaching MOP$11.7 billion (US$1.47 billion). This is an increase of 57.7% compared to April 2020. The majority of this spending was on accommodation, shopping, and entertainment activities, as well as food and beverage services.

The MGTO has also reported that the average length of stay for tourists visiting Macau in April 2021 was 1.6 days, a slight decrease from 1.7 days in April 2020. This suggests that visitors are taking shorter trips to Macau, likely due to the current travel restrictions in place.

Overall, Macau’s tourism industry has seen a remarkable recovery since the start of 2021. With the easing of travel restrictions and the introduction of new measures to promote tourism, Macau is well on its way to becoming a major tourist destination in Asia once again.
